Announcing the Advisory Panel for the ARDC HASS Research Data Commons and Indigenous Research Capability Program

We announce the appointment of the Advisory Panel for the HASS Research Data Commons and Indigenous Research Capability Program, and provide an update on the next steps.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of the Chair and several members of the Advisory Panel for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) Research Data Commons and Indigenous Research Capability Program, which is being led by the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC).

The Advisory Panel comprises expert representatives from relevant national and international bodies in the HASS and Indigenous domains.

The Advisory Panel includes:

Chair and representative from the Higher Education Library community – Jill Benn

Jill is the University Librarian at the University of Western Australia (UWA) and has significant experience in libraries and professional associations in the higher education sector. She is currently the Chair of the Council of Australian University Librarians, on the Board of the International Association of University Libraries and serves as a Council member of the Research Data Alliance. Jill is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Academy of the Humanities representative – Dr Kylie Brass

Dr Kylie Brass is the Policy and Research Director at the Australian Academy of the Humanities, where she coordinates a research and policy agenda focused on the future humanities workforce and national research infrastructure. She is co-author (with Professor Graeme Turner FAHA) of Mapping the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences in Australia.

International HASS digital research infrastructure representative – Ron Dekker

Ron Dekker is the director of CESSDA ERIC, the Consortium of Social Science Data Archives and the coordinator of Social Sciences and Humanities Open Cloud (SSHOC). He is also the project leader of the EOSC Future project that aims to realise the European Open Science Cloud, EOSC.

CESSDA is a European Infrastructure with 23 members (countries) and combines the work and expertise of these countries’ social science data service providers, see www.cessda.eu. Ron studied econometrics and worked for 10 years in labour market research at Dutch universities. He was at the national research council for almost 20 years – running a data agency, program committees and in general management (institutes, infrastructure and open science). This included secondment to the Dutch government for project leadership on Open Science of the Dutch EU Presidency in 2016 and as national expert at the European Commission in Brussels in 2017.

Academy of Social Sciences representative – Dr Chris Hatherly

Dr Chris Hatherly has been CEO of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia since July 2019. Previously he was Director, Science Policy at the Australian Academy of Science, and National Research Manager with Alzheimer’s Australia. Chris has a PhD in cognitive psychology from the ANU, and has more than 10 years’ experience working at the interface of research, policy, service delivery and community.

Representative from the researcher community – A/Prof Anna Johnston

A/Prof Anna Johnston is Associate Professor in English Literature in the School of Communication and Arts at the University of Queensland, and was an ARC Future Fellow (2014-19) and Deputy Director of UQ’s Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, 2018-20. Anna worked at the University of Tasmania, where she was Director of the Centre for Colonialism and Its Aftermath (2013-16) and an ARC Queen Elizabeth II Research Fellow (2007-14). In 2014-15, Anna was Visiting Professor of Australian Studies at the University of Tokyo.

Indigenous research community representative – Prof Peter Radoll FRSN [announced 14 September 2021]

Prof Peter Radoll is the Acting CEO EPIC CRC, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Indigenous and Director, Ngunnawal Centre, Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership and Strategy, University of Canberra.

8 September: Information session, Project Plans will be made available for feedback.

14 September: Video presentations by Activity Leads will be published on the ARDC Project Plans webpage

21 September: Roundtable event to seek further feedback on plans. The Advisory Panel will be in attendance. You will receive an invitation to this event in the coming weeks. Roundtable invitation.

27 September: Final day for public feedback submissions on the Project Plans.

End of October: Final project plans will be released.
