The ARDC Wins Bid to Host International Data Week 2025 in Australia

International Data Week (IDW) 2025 will be held in Brisbane, Australia, following a successful bid spearheaded by the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and supported by leading institutional and industry partners in the Asia Pacific region.

The ARDC is thrilled to share this exciting news with the Australian research and science community, announced yesterday 23 June at IDW 2022 in Seoul, Korea.

IDW is a pre-eminent global conference, organised by the Committee on Data (CODATA) and the World Data System (WDS) of the International Science Council (ISC), and the Research Data Alliance (RDA). The hybrid global conference is the most celebrated data festival gathering data scientists, researchers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers and data stewards across various disciplines to advance science and society through data-driven discovery and innovation.

Rosie Hicks, CEO of the ARDC said, “We are thrilled to be bringing International Data Week to Australia in 2025. The conference will shine a light on the power of data-driven research to solve the big challenges the world faces today, including climate change, food and energy security.”

The theme for IDW 2025 is “Trusted research data driving innovation and a better world”. The theme will be delivered through an innovative program that caters for a rich face-to-face delegate experience both in and beyond the conference room as well as an online option for those unable to travel.

Besides solution-oriented session topics that will address Australia and the region’s research data challenges through the conference program, delegates attending in-person can experience site visits to local research facilities, warm hospitality at the many social events around Brisbane, and even visit the Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

One of the primary goals for IDW 2025 is to strengthen ties between the research data community in Australia and the Asia Pacific region by establishing sustainable communities that advocate for open science and data sharing practices across the APAC region, which will continue after the conference.

IDW 2025 will also act as a catalyst to inspire young researchers and data scientists through the Data Careers Hub, IDW ‘Data Billabongs’ (social gatherings), and the Young Data Researcher Awards.

Brisbane, the host city, has a successful track record for hosting high-impact conventions. The city’s subtropical climate, combined with proximity to famous rainforest and wildlife tours, makes it a perfect location for IDW delegates to start their quintessential Australian experience.

Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre (BCEC) provides national and international delegates with world-class convention infrastructure nestled in the city’s most renowned cultural precinct enabling IDW delegates to unwind, recharge, and network.
