The Australian eResearch Skilled Workforce Summit

The Australian eResearch Skilled Workforce Summit will take place on 29 and 30 July 2019 in Sydney. It is being coordinated by the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC), Council of Australasian University Directors of Information Technology (CAUDIT) and Universities Australia (UA).

The Summit will focus on the development of the digitally skilled workforce, essential for research in the 21st century. It will provide a platform to answer the big questions such as “what skills will our researchers, data or software specialists and research support staff need to survive and thrive in this new world of data-enabled research?” Project outcomes from the Australian Research Data Commons’ (ARDC) Skilled Workforce Discovery Activities will also feature in the Summit.

The Summit will bring together stakeholders involved or interested in developing an Australian research workforce composed of both digitally skilled researchers, and research support professionals to maximise research impact. International perspectives will be provided by Hugh Shanahan, Department of Computer Science at Royal Holloway, University of London.

The aims of the Summit are to:

  1. bring together key stakeholders to collaboratively develop a vision for a digitally skilled research workforce, develop coordination structures to identify roles and responsibilities, and prioritise solutions going forward
  2. improve understanding and articulation of the benefits of this focus, in terms of the gains that can be achieved in maximising Australia’s research impact.

It will also focus on the skills needed by researchers, Higher Degree Research students, and research support professionals such as Data Stewards and Research Software Engineers. This includes taking into consideration appropriate curriculum and training opportunities, community development, possible career paths, and enabling factors such as employment and funding policy. Coordination of the development of undergraduate digital skills is not currently in scope. View the program summary to see what's scheduled for each day. A detailed program for Day 2 will be available soon.

Linda O'Brien will give a keynote address at the Australian eResearch Skilled Workforce Summit. Linda is Pro Vice Chancellor at Griffith University, Head of Logan Campus and University Librarian. With a background as an educator, Linda has served on various bodies from CAUL and CAUDIT to ORCID. She is a well known figure in the Australian eResearch community and is passionate about skills development.
