ARDC National Skills Forum (May 2025): Finding the Right Tool: Cloud Computing vs HPC

Join the ARDC, NCI and Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre to learn how to leverage both cloud computing and HPC to enhance research.

About the Event

A frustrated researcher comes to you with a slow running computer, a lot more data to analyse and a close deadline. You know that additional computational resources would help them, and that either cloud computing or high-performance computing (HPC) will fit the bill. The researcher will need to quickly understand a few important concepts. How do you work out and communicate the best solution?

Join us for an engaging discussion where specialist research trainers will share insights on how to leverage both cloud computing and HPC to enhance research capabilities. Whether you are new to these technologies or looking to deepen your understanding, this forum will provide valuable perspectives and practical advice.

Questions are encouraged. Time will be set aside to share experiences with guiding researchers through this rapidly changing world of computational research!

Key Questions

In this forum, we will explore:

  • What are the primary differences between cloud computing and HPC in terms of how research tasks are completed?
  • How can researchers determine which platform best suits their computational needs?
  • What are the latest updates and innovations in both fields?

Speakers

Who Should Attend

People who train researchers and broader stakeholders invested in data skill uplift in research, including but not limited to:

  • trainers and training managers
  • research software engineers (RSEs)
  • NCRIS and compute facilities staff
  • researchers who coach and mentor peers and colleagues
  • higher-degree research (HDR) supervisors
  • HDR students
