Ecoacoustics in Action: Real-World Applications and Insights

Join us to hear about applications of the Open Ecoacoustics platform for continental-scale ecological monitoring and research
kookaburra

About the Event

You’re invited to the first webinar in the 2025 Open Ecoacoustics Webinar Series, The Open Ecoacoustics platform supports continental-scale fauna monitoring and research, something that was previously impossible and is contributing towards a national ecosystem observatory capability.

By enabling large-scale, long-term acoustic data collection and analysis, the platform is revolutionising ecological research and transforming how we manage and conserve biodiversity, protect threatened species, and safeguard food security.

In the webinar series, you’ll discover compelling real-world applications of the platform across diverse ecosystems and research areas. Learn how users are leveraging ecoacoustic data to drive impactful decisions—and get the chance to ask experts how you can apply the tools in your own work.

Whether you’re new to ecoacoustics or an experienced researcher, this session will offer valuable insights into the future of sound-based environmental monitoring.

Speakers

We’re thrilled to have 3 speakers sharing their experiences with Open Ecoacoustics at this webinar:

Lola Lange, QUT

Title of talk: Ecoacoustic insights into the habitat use and distribution of the endangered Pink Cockatoo in Australia

Lola Lange is a PhD student at QUT, using ecoacoustics to explore how biodiversity responds to environmental variation, with current fieldwork based in Springbrook National Park. Today, she’ll share insights from her research on the endangered Pink Cockatoo, highlighting how acoustic monitoring can inform conservation in Australia’s dryland ecosystems.

Slade Allen-Ankins, James Cook University

Title of talk: Detecting threatened and introduced species in ecoacoustic recordings

Dr Slade Allen-Ankins is a postdoctoral researcher at James Cook University working on techniques and approaches for using acoustics to monitor vertebrates in many different settings.

Karen Rowe, Museums Victoria Research Institute

Title of talk: Leveraging ecoacoustic data to better understand how birds respond to fire

Karen Rowe is the Senior Curator of Birds at the Museums Victoria Research Institute. Her lab specialises in leveraging ecoacoustics data to document the diversity and distribution of species and how animals respond to ecological disturbances, including fire.

About the 2025 Open Ecoacoustics Webinar Series

The 2025 Open Ecoacoustics Webinar Series will feature 3 one-hour sessions designed to engage and connect the Australian ecoacoustic community. This series offers a platform for exploring compelling and thought-provoking topics related to ecoacoustics while fostering ongoing collaboration among community members. Each webinar will include structured segments such as expert panels and lightning talks, followed by an open discussion to encourage audience interaction and questions.
