About the Event

Is human research ethics review the bane of a researcher’s existence as some would claim? Do ethics committees regularly overreach their review mandate? Do we need human ethics review processes at all? For Professor Michael A. Martin of the Australian National University (ANU), the answers to these questions are a resounding no, no and yes, respectively, if one takes the holistic view that research ethics and research practice should not be considered as separate or even parallel processes, but rather as integrated – and integral – parts of the research life cycle.

In this presentation, given by Prof Martin, we will examine some core ethical concerns that bind research processes to ethical conduct:

  • ethical conduct as a social contract
  • consent and how it is evolving
  • why ethics committees have to think about methodology
  • how AI may well change everything (and not necessarily in a good way) about the way we think about data.
