It was great to see many people from our HASS and Indigenous research community at recent events, including the 6th annual conference of the Canadian Australian Partnership for Open Scholarship (CAPOS), Open Education Global Conference (OE Global) and the International Congress of Research Infrastructures (ICRI).

Our team members and focus areas partners were also involved in Oral History Australia (OHA) Conference 2024, Australian Linguistic Society (ALS), ResBaz QLD and ResBaz Victoria, ALTA, 55th Annual Academy of Humanities Symposium, Mapping Vernacular Terrains Conference, and many more!

Two focus areas for the HASS and Indigenous Research Data Commons (RDC) are in the final stages of contracting 4-year research infrastructure projects and we look forward to announcing them in the new year. They are the Social Science Research Infrastructure Network and Australian Creative Histories and Futures.

The social sciences project has already been endorsed by key government partners, with Dr David Gruen AO, Australian Statistician, sharing the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) enthusiasm for the project in his keynote address at the 2024 Australian Government Data Forum in November.

“This is an opportunity for the ABS to enhance collaboration between social science university researchers, government agencies, the not-for-profit sector and communities. This project will result in enhancements to PLIDA documentation and ease of use, as well as guidelines for users of government administrative data on Indigenous people,” said Dr Gruen. Read Dr Gruen’s keynote address.

Commencing in February, we will conduct a co-design process to develop a new project plan for the ARDC Community Data Lab, our sixth focus area for the HASS and Indigenous RDC.

ARDC Indigenous Data Governance Masterclass at Summer School

Although the 2025 HASS and Indigenous RDC Summer School registrations have reached capacity and now have a waitlist, there are a few spots still available for the Indigenous Data Governance Masterclass. It will be held on 3 February 2025 at the State Library of Queensland in Brisbane/Meanjin. The Masterclass will equip participants with the knowledge and tools to ethically manage Indigenous data, respecting cultural protocols and sovereignty of Indigenous communities. It will build the capacity of researchers to engage with Indigenous data, fostering a culturally sensitive and informed approach to data-driven projects. The masterclass is for data custodians working with Indigenous data and researchers from any discipline who collect or work with Indigenous data. Secure your spot today – register now >

Person Level Integrated Data Asset (PLIDA) Review >
The Productivity Commission has released a paper on using PLIDA for public policy research and reporting. We recommend reading the report to learn more about the data asset, including technical details and its value to researchers. As part of our HASS and Indigenous Research Data Commons, we are working with our partners to enhance PLIDA for researchers and apply Indigenous Data Governance principles to the data.

FAIR Data Self-Assessment Tool >
We’ve updated our popular tool to help researchers assess the findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability (FAIR) of their datasets. It offers practical tips to enhance your dataset’s FAIRness. We’d appreciate your feedback on the tool—please share your thoughts using the form at the bottom of the page.
